Radical is a English-Japanese dictionary designed to help learners boost their kanji and vocabulary acquisition by identifying meaning and phonetic radicals. It is made by a Japanese teacher and professor who thought current apps were not really helpful for actual learners of Japanese.
More effective kanji acquisition:
-Radical does not make up a story for you to understand a kanji. Instead, it analyzes it for you in the actual radicals (or parts of kanji) that is made of. The meaning radical will give you the meaning of the kanji; the phonetic radical will give you the on'yomi reading (the reading when the kanji is next to another kanji). The kanji you need to learn for a specific JLPT level is also coded.
More effective vocabulary acquisition:
-Radical allows you to boost vocabulary acquisition by giving you the meaning of the kanji involved, samples sentences to see the word in context, and a JLPT level tag so you know if you need to memorize the word. The search function is available in both English and Japanese.
-After V. 11, you can add words you look up to Your Vocabulary List by clicking on the + sign of any entry. Find Your Vocabulary List on the Study tab, where you can sort your words by date, JLPT level or alphabetically. Click on "漢字", "hらがな" or "Meaning" to hide the column and study better, click on the word in Japanese (kanji or hiragana) to look up the word in the dictionary, and click on the English translation to edit it or delete the entry.
More effective kana acquisition:
-Find a Hiragana and a Katakana chart on the Study tab, and do Hiragana and Katakana quizzes on the Test tab. If you complete a test, you'll see how the button changes color (green if perfect, yellow if so-so, orange if you need to do better, and red if you didn't really do a good job).
Version 11 [released Aug 27, 2025] now contains 210,641 words, 805 phonetic radicals, 278 meaning radicals, 6,368 kanji, 246,737 sample sentences and 9,756 JLPT tags, partly obtained from JMDict, KANJIDIC, Tatoeba, Ishizawa-sensei's blog, and my own memory. Radical's new version on Google Play will soon be updated to contain features such as tracking kanji & radical acquisition progress, customizable tests, and study plans by JLPT level.
